The Swedish gaming studio behind The Darkness, Starbreeze, is working on a virtual reality based headset called StarVR. The StarVR Virtual Reality Headset was revealed at E3 2015, and promises an amazing 210 degrees of view.

In releasing Star VR, the company will be directly competing with the Oculus VR headset, apart from the multiple smaller VR headset based products coming out this year.

For perspective, the Oculus Virtual Reality headset offers a 100 degrees field of view, so in that sense the StarVR headset is miles ahead. The headset comprises two 5.5-inch Quad HD panels that are capable of churning out a display resolution of 5120×1440 pixels.

The headset will be used to promote an upcoming title based on The Walking Dead, and is expected to be released in 2016. Starbreeze is calling its headset a 5K VR headset.

The company intends to offer a world class experience to gamers. Starbreeze is also coming fresh from acquiring InfinitEye, a French virtual reality company. This naturally means that the company is keen on offering both hardware and software based experiences.

Going forward, virtual reality headsets are going to be a key aspect of the entertainment industry. StarVR has what it takes to offer the next generation of entertainment to users, according to the company.

The StarVR Virtual Reality Headset also offers a positional tracking capability, and a 130 degrees vertical field of vision.

The VR headset will support the existing Steam OpenVR framework which is good news for both developers and users. The market is likely to get more fragmented as more manufacturers get into the VR game, but following an open framework will only keep things better.

Some other Virtual Reality headsets that are expected to hit the market soon include the SteamVR, Oculus Rift, and Sony’s Project Morpheus.

All these companies have been working hard on bringing a great VR experience to the user. In the case of the StarVR Headset, it’s going to be interesting to see what a software based company brings to the market.
